The Sustainable Development Committee of the Arab Federation for Digital Economy held its first meeting – via video conference – to discuss the decision to establish the committee, define its objectives, adopt its general directions, and develop the initial frameworks for its work plans and strategies to support sustainable development in the Arab region, in accordance with the Federation’s strategic vision and institutional priorities.

The meeting comes within the framework of the Arab Federation for Digital Economy’s strategic direction towards integrating the concepts of sustainable development as a governing framework in building integrated digital systems capable of raising the efficiency of the use of available resources in Arab countries, and supporting integration and coordination with relevant national, regional and international bodies.

During the meeting, ways to deal with the rapid economic and digital transformations in the Arab region were discussed, and existing initiatives that contribute to integrating the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development were reviewed, in addition to discussing mechanisms for implementing best regional and international practices, and benefiting from available expertise in a way that raises the impact of digital and economic initiatives, ensures the sustainability of their results and achieves tangible added value for Arab societies.

The conceptual and institutional framework of the committee’s work was also discussed, as well as its role in integrating the principles of sustainable development within the Federation’s work system, in a way that contributes to developing strategic planning, formulating policies, and designing initiatives capable of achieving balanced and sustainable economic growth, raising the efficiency of resource use, supporting innovation, and building human capacities.

The committee members discussed mechanisms for preparing an integrated action plan that includes clear axes, feasible goals, and phased programs distributed over the short, medium and long term, with this plan to be submitted to the Federation for approval, and to begin its implementation according to a specific timetable, in a way that ensures a tangible impact at the level of the Arab region.

In the same context, the importance of institutional cooperation with the Department of International Cooperation and Sustainable Development at the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States was emphasized, with the aim of reviewing the initiatives and programs being implemented at the Arab level, exploring opportunities for the Sustainable Development Committee to participate in them, and benefiting from them in supporting sustainable development efforts in Arab countries, thereby consolidating institutional integration, raising the level of coordination, and contributing to maximizing the common regional impact.

During the meeting, His Excellency Ambassador Ashraf Rashid, Chairman of the Sustainable Development Committee, stressed the importance of integrated work among Arab institutions and the need for a systematic transition from the planning stage to the implementation stage, through practical initiatives, effective partnerships, and clear cooperation frameworks that contribute to supporting sustainable development paths and achieving its goals in the Arab region.
