The Arab Center for Learning and Future Studies, affiliated with the Arab Federation for Digital Economy, has released a new study titled “Scientific Research in the Arab World: A Brief Study on the Challenges and Opportunities of Transforming Scientific Research into a Locomotive for Economics and Development.” The study highlights the role of scientific research in economic development, discusses the obstacles hindering its development in the Arab region, and offers a set of recommendations for policymakers and decision-makers.

The study, prepared by His Excellency Dr. Ali Mohammed Al Khouri, President of the Arab Federation for Digital Economy, addresses several key themes, most notably: weak funding and investment in scientific research, research policies and governance, brain drain, opportunities available in light of the digital revolution, the role of international cooperation, and the importance of aligning scientific research with the needs of economic and social development . The study also reviews successful international experiences, such as those of China, South Korea, and Singapore, to draw lessons that can contribute to building an Arab research system capable of competing globally.

The study emphasizes the need to increase funding for research and development, encourage the private sector to participate in supporting applied research, and establish more effective government policies to link scientific research with economic sectors . The study also emphasized the importance of establishing joint Arab research centers and adopting clear national strategies to support innovation and achieve scientific and technological sovereignty .

This study is part of the research efforts undertaken by the Arab Center for Learning and Future Studies to advance knowledge societies and provide innovative solutions that serve the digital transformation and knowledge economy in the Arab world.
