The Arab Federation for Digital Economy participated in a high-level strategic dialogue held in Cairo to discuss the impact of transformations in global trade on emerging markets, as part of the activities of the “International Intensive Study Tour Program (IISTP)” organized by ESLSCA University in partnership with the Milpark Education Foundation from South Africa.

The Federation was represented in the dialogue by Dr. Ibrahim Mustafa, Chairman of the Investment Committee, who presented an analytical vision on the repercussions of the protectionist trade policies witnessed in global markets, including the tariffs announced by some major economies, and their impact on investment movement and international supply chains.

Trade shifts… and their direct impact on Africa and Egypt

Dr. Mustafa explained that the continuation of protectionist trends increases the pressures on emerging economies, noting that South Africa may face a decline in its export access to traditional markets, which calls for strengthening regional cooperation and diversifying trade partnerships.

As for Egypt, he stressed that its geographical location provides opportunities to enhance its role as a trade and logistics hub, but maintaining its competitiveness requires greater investments in digital infrastructure and smart trade-related services.

Digitalization: A safe path to confront global challenges

The head of the investment committee explained that growing trade tensions are redrawing the map of international investments, making the Arab and African region a more attractive destination as global companies seek stable markets and clear regulatory environments.

He pointed out that investing in the digital economy is a strategic option for Arab and African countries to enhance their resilience in the face of external shocks, through the development of more transparent government digital platforms, the expansion of electronic payments, and support for cross-border e-commerce.

The role of the Arab Federation for Digital Economy

Dr. Mustafa stressed that the Federation  is working to enhance digital economic integration in the region by supporting initiatives that contribute to building a technological infrastructure capable of absorbing the rapid growth in the digital economy, pointing to the importance of linking economic analyses with new investment trends to ensure that Arab countries are ready for global changes.

The Federation’s participation in the dialogue came with the aim of highlighting the opportunities available to Arab and African countries in light of international trade transformations, and highlighting the role of the digital economy as a development lever capable of enhancing competitiveness and opening new markets.
