The Middle East shapes the future of infrastructure: Artificial intelligence and sustainability drive transformation

The transformation of infrastructure in the Middle East is not just a modernization of networks and facilities, but a redefinition of the role of these vital assets in supporting economic competitiveness and sustainability. Siemens’ Middle East Infrastructure Transformation Index 2026 report reveals that the region is at the forefront of global markets in terms of commitment to this transformation, driven by the acceleration of the adoption of artificial intelligence and the enhancement of the resilience of systems.

Ambition beyond the global averages

The report, which was based on a survey of 400 senior executives in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar and Oman, along with in-depth interviews with industry experts, reflects a unified regional landscape towards impact.

The results showed that 66% of the region’s executives believe that the transformation of the energy sector should be accelerated globally, compared to only 57% globally. This growing sense of urgency reflects the recognition that infrastructure is no longer just operational assets, but a strategic driver of sustainable growth.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping the scene

62% of respondents expect artificial intelligence to transform infrastructure operations over the next three years. This is not just a theoretical expectation, but is reflected in concrete investments; 56% of organizations have reported that they are ready to implement independent in-building systems, while 57% plan to make significant investments in this area over the next year.

The need for data integration comes as a prerequisite for this transformation, with 69% of respondents stressing that their organizations need more advanced solutions for data integration, and the same percentage plans to increase spending on these technologies. 64% believe that smart grids and network management software are key enablers to accelerate the clean energy transition.

Flexibility: New Efficiency Standard

In light of the accelerating transformations and climate challenges, operational resilience has become a title for modern efficiency. 61% of executives confirm that artificial intelligence enhances the ability of critical infrastructure to predict and respond to failures effectively. It also supports the integration of the energy system through the connection of electricity, gas, hydrogen and the transport sector within a unified platform.

The region continues to invest in regional electricity interconnection projects, such as the 3 GW Egyptian-Saudi interconnection project, which is a pivotal step to enhance energy security and raise the capacity of networks to meet future challenges.

Sustainability at the heart of design

The region’s commitment to emission reductions is highlighted as a key indicator of the seriousness of the transition. 70% of organisations in the Middle East have set targets to reduce direct and indirect emissions, compared to 58 per cent globally. 68% of respondents consider digitization to be the key driver of achieving these goals.

This trend is supported by close cooperation between the public and private sectors, with 65% of respondents confirming strong cooperation in the formulation of energy systems policies, exceeding the global average of 59%.
